[posted June, 1999] I obtained a law degree form Memphis State University, served in the Navy, and have practiced law in Memphis for 33 years, primarily in the field of maritime law; my firm is Bateman, Gibson & Childers, Cotton Exchange Building. Click here to read the obituary. Pat Black [last update January, 2007] My wife, Linda, and I have 3 children. Mary Catherine married Brad Burney after graduating from the University of Arkansas. They have 3 children and live in Little Rock Ark. Elise married Doug Hixon after graduating from The University of Alabama. They have 4 children and live in Montgomery, Ala. Bryan graduated from Sullivan Culinary School and is a chef at Ronnie Grisanti's. He is divorced, has a son and lives in Memphis. I retired from IBM after 29 1/2 years and am currently the Assistant Treasurer for the City of Memphis. I enjoy what I do and do not plan to retire until I no longer enjoy my work or my health fails. It is disappointing to hear of the loss of so many of our classmates. I guess we are all getting to that age. The reunions have been a great way to renew friendships, get updated and see how great everyone looks today. The monthly luncheons are a great way to keep up with everyone. Regardless, I have wonderful memories of friends and events. It was the only high school (I attended 2 others - and no I wasn't a military brat) that had recognized sororities in which I participated. I married in December of 1956 and became Mrs. Peter Nelson Berkowitz. That marriage lasted 18 years and produced three daughters. I remarried in 1978 and was blessed with a fourth daughter by my second husband's first marriage. We had been married 25 years when he passed. I also have 5 grandchilden ages 15, 14, 14, 9 and 8. I have my own small business in which I entertain at senior living communities, rehab centers and nursing homes. I recite poetry, monologues from broadway comedies and perform sing-alongs. My "real" passion/job is helping people with a low income (seniors and younger people) receive free prescription medications. If anyone's interested they should contact me. CAREER SUMMARY: 34 years Auto-Chlor System - Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer (commercial dishwashing & laundry service, chemicals and equipment - parent company home office in Memphis - 91 plants nationwide). I retired at age 58 to manage my private investments and holdings, continue to do some venture capital investments. She graduated from East High in 1958 and University of Memphis in 1964. She was a dear, wonderful wife and the terrific mother of our two children. She died of breast cancer in 1998. My daughter, Van Magness, lives in Ft. Smith and has degree in Interior Design from the University of Arkansas. She home-schools their son and daughter. Her husband is an attorney. My son, Roger, Jr., is the Senior Vice President and Personal Trust Manager for Regions Morgan Keegan Trust Company. He graduated from Washington and Lee University, has a Masters of Divinity degree from Reformed Theological Seminary and a JD from University of Memphis Law School. He and his wife also have a son and daughter. Ken Gates [last updated April, 2007] I retired to Fairfield Bay in June 2001. My wife of 44 years, Pat, passed away of cancer in December 2004. Fairfield Bay is a resort, retirement community in north central Arkansas on Greers Ferry Lake. We have a permanent population of 2500 and many part time weekend folks. Many of the weekenders are from the Memphis area. I sing in the choir of Fairfield Bay United Methodist Church, fish and boat a little, and operate an internet sports fan store, "CollegeSportsStuff.com", that I built in 2002. I am also active in our fitness center and serve on the board of directors of the center. Seeing all of you at the reunion last year was a nice treat. That was the last time I have been to Memphis, but I do have two daughters and five grand children who live in Memphis and Collierville. I have a son living in Jackson, Tennessee. Since moving to Arkansas I have become as much a Razorback fan as I am a Memphis and Tennessee fan. My late wife, Pat, was an alumni of the UofA, so I have lots of experience "calling the hogs". I am a life member of the Arkansas Alumni Association. That's about all there is to tell. I am just an old man living in the foothills of The Ozarks and trying to make the most of life. Yaw'll come, ya hear! David Gibson [last updated April, 2009] It's been a couple of years, so I reakon it's time for an update. I'm still retired (Professor Emeritus of Psychology, The University of Tennessee at Martin) and still living in Martin, Tennessee at the same address (104 Eagle Cove) with the same telephone number (731-587-4846) and email address [see below]. I'm still married to Carol Crone (It's been 47 years now, and she grows even lovlier), and have two daughters who live with their husbands and our four grandchildren in the Nashville area. My health has improved, and I'm more physically active than in 2007. I run recreationally, target shoot, play piano, act as a Volunteer in Police Service (VIPS), read like crazy and enjoy travel with Carol and our friends. I still feel a profound sense of indebtedness to the wonderful teachers and role models we had at East back in the day (thank you Ms Boston, Mr. Toney, Ms Vollmer, Ms Wills and others). I know every generation feels much the same way, but I really believe we were blessed to live and come of age in a special time and place. While I do enjoy Facebooking with the younger crowd, I can't help but laugh at some of my 'friends' when they talk as though they invented social networking. Most of them have no idea what real social networking is. In our day, we all knew everyone in our peer group we cared to socialize with, regardless of what school they attended, through sports networks, music networks, church networks or other mutual interests, and the contact was up close and personal not virtual. [posted June, 2011] I graduated from MSU in June,1962, and attended UT College of Medicine from March '63 - June '66, MSU Law School- JD - 74. I have been in practice of general law since then and am presently at 707 Adams Avenue in Memphis. I have never married, but have been an active heterosexual who has had the distinct privilege of knowing a good many wonderful women over the years. I remain in excellent physical & hopefully mental condition with all parts presently functioning efficiently. I would love to hear from all you survivors whenever you may find the time to schmooze a bit. Webber Hall [last updated October, 2018] After graduation went to work at WMCT television. After 5 years moved to WHBQ TV for 5 years at "Q" TV. This was my learning curve before moving to Hollywood in 1967. Worked there at a company called Hollywood Video Center for 3 years. HVC was a video facility with stages and electronic cameras for producing shows. We did the Steve Allen show for 9 months, then The Pat Boone Show, The Della Reese Show, The Virginia Graham Show and a John Wayne special that aired on NBC in 1970. Became good friends with Pat Boone, ( a super person ) and John Wayne. John Wayne show had a great "wrap party" where he handed out cigar lighters with "Stolen from John Wayne" on the front.     In 1971 moved to the ABC-TV network In Hollywood. The ABC studio lot was an old movie lot from the 1940s, an interesting bit of history. Worked in engineering dept in Video Tape Maintenance for about 7 months, then moved to Post Production department. This was where all the video tape editing was done for many shows. While in this department I designed 4 editing rooms and with a crew put in all the cables, etd. Later designed a circuit board and wrote the software to control this board which controlled 3 2 inch video tape recorders. Made for fast editing and more.     Met my wife on the set of the Della Reese show and we were married in 1971, at the Little Brown Church in the Valley. My last 6 years at ABC was in Engineering Maintenance department ad the manager. Was responsable for the good health of 5 major stages and equipment, Master Control and the Earth Station.    Retired in late 1995, and later moved to Roanoke Virginia to be closer to family. Harriet Krivcher [last updated January, 2000] [E-mail address updated October, 2005] After East High: two years at Vanderbilt, then graduation from Memphis State (BBA in finance, 1960; MA in English,1966), marriage to Irwin "Fry" Freiberger and birth of daughter Jeri, a number of years as office manager of husband's insurance agency, as competitor and board member of Memphis Area Women's Golf Association and Memphis Women's Interclub Golf Association. In 1982 we left Memphis for Colorado, where we now live some fifteen miles northwest of Steamboat Springs. I write about the west for regional publications, and just last year, Sunstone Press of Santa Fe published my book ( Lucien Maxwell: Villain or Visionary), biography of a New Mexican pioneer. You can see that we are well located Janis McKinney [last updated May, 2010] After reading and enjoying the 1956 class information for several years, I thought it time to participate! I retired in January 2008 after 12 years as Health Care Administrator at a very active 500+ resident Christian retirement community -- independent, assisted living, and skilled nursing. We are in the country (town of Penney Farms near Jacksonville, FL), so it is quiet and peaceful -- until you enter the grounds and observe all the activity. I built a house here and can't think of a better place to live. Stay so busy I don't know when I had time to work -- enjoy painting, piano, and golf, which I took up after retirement. My favorite mode of transportation around the campus is my bicycle. Volunteer work here and teaching 3rd/4th grade girls in Sunday School fill my time. Most important in my life is my faith in Jesus Christ. My two children, Lisa and Glenn, live in the Atlanta area. Lisa had one son, whom we lost 5 years ago. Glenn has 2 beautiful little girls, almost 6 and 8. He works for Georgia Power and Light, and wife Suzette is a homemaker (interior designer by education). I FINALLY graduated in 1991 from the University of North Florida in Jacksonville with a degree in Health Science. My younger brother Wayne lives in Boca Raton, so we visit as often as possible and talk weekly. He was a professional teaching golf pro and spends most of his time running junior golf tournaments as a volunteer. I keep up with a number of our fellow graduates. Bob Morgan [last updated December, 2007] After graduation, I attended Southwestern at Memphis for two years and then joined the Air Force where I served as a pilot and retired a Lt. Col, after 23 years. I have been married to Ann, my best friend and partner for 46 years. We have two sons, David, Executive Director of Ambulatory Services, UCSF Medical Center and Shan, Senior Vice President ELMA Electronic and GM of Optima EPS. I earned my BA in Political Science At the University of Kansas in 1965 and a Masters in Exercise Physiology at Arizona State in 1983. I coached competitive swimming for Mesa Aquatics. Next, I owned and operated a video store for 10 years until we sold out indirectly to Blockbuster. I now do web site design and search engine placement (www.mwebworks.com) primarily for my real estate clients, especially (www.annmorgan.com) and others (www.optimaeps.com). Frank Morgret [last updated June, 2014] After I graduated from East High, I accepted an appointment to the USCG Academy. East had prepared me well, and my classmates in CGA60 wouldn't let me quit. I graduated in 1960 with a BSc in general engineering and a commission as an ensign in the CG. The next day I acquired a wife, the former Nancy Davis from Middletown, Connecticut. We have 4 daughters, 2 granddaughters, and one grandson. After 6 years, including assignments to 2 sea-going 311' cutters, and a 3 year hitch as XO of USCG BASE DETROIT, I resigned my commission to enter seminary. God decided Canada needed me, and I've been here since 1968, with only a couple breaks for post grad work. I picked up a BD, a MDiv, a MA(phil), and a STM along the way. I became a Canadian citizen in 1982. I have served parishes in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Québec. As well, for 5 years I was chair of the department of historical theology and director of the library at our small seminary in Ontario. Five years ago, Nancy and I moved to the old walled city of Québec. We thought we might as well retire in the most beautiful city we had ever seen. God had the last laugh on that one. I am flunking retirement thoroughly. I am Conseiller pastoral en résidence de Église Évangélique Luthérienne de la Sainte-Trinité de ville de Québec. I conduct a couple services a month en français. As some of you will remember, after Mrs. Riggs Latin, did I take French? Nope, Spanish. And, as some of you will also remember, when it comes to learning a foreign language, I'm simply incompetent. Are any of you French tutors who want to know what -40° feels like? I can use a lot of help here. And the chow is great! I am in awe of how well East prepared me for a life I never really expected. Bobbye Jo Shumaker [last updated May, 2007] I am retired. I live with my husband of 47 years. My only son and his family live about 10 minutes away. He has two children--Frances is 9 and Charlie is 4. I worked in education for 40 years. I taught in the classroom for 14 years and then worked as an educational consultant for the state of North Carolina for the rest of my career. I taught teachers and administrators. I also worked with the Legislature for several years with a section of NC Dept. of Instruction that served as a liaison to the Legislature. I like to read, to cook, to sew Halloween costumes and stuffed toys for the grandkids, and to spend time with family. My husband, a former coach, is a sports nut; so we watch quite a lot of sports on TV. One of my favorite things is to sit on my back screened porch with a book and a glass of tea. I retired in 1996 and have been playing golf,fishing,traveling and doing some charity work since. We have two sons ...one in the Chicago area who has two girls and two boys,and one in the Jacksonville Fl area who has one girl and one boy. We attended my 50th class reunion this past June and had a wonderful time. John West [last updated August, 2005] Since graduating in 1956, I received my BS degree from East Texas State where I met and married my wife Charlotte. We have three children and five grand-children. We celebrate 46 years this September. In 1961 we moved to Memphis where I taught and coached at Memphis Frayser. During that time I received my MA from Memphis State. We then moved to Jackson where I was on the faculty at Union. Then it was on to Furman to coach for the next four years. Then on to the Univ. of South Carolina to be the head track coach. Furman then invited me back to be the Director of Athletics. Did that for eight years and then began speaking full-time. Charlotte and I traveled America doing motivational-inspirational speaking to schools, churches and in the market-place. After about eight years of that, I was invited to Dallas to work with Dr. Kenneth Cooper at the Aerobics Center. The church we were attending, Prestonwood Baptist (23,000 members) asked me to join their staff which I did for 15 years. During that time, Dallas Baptist University, honored me with an honorary Doctorate in Theology. That's a lot for a boy who wasn't sure he would graduate from East until the week before graduation....... I retired from the church staff three years ago after doctors found two aneurysms in my brain thanks to my dentist sending me for MRI to see what might be causing my jaw pain. I still do some ministry but not the hrs. plus a week that I was doing. I hope all of you who might see this will signup on our alumni page. [posted July, 2006] Retired from 40 years in construction in 1999. Worked for Cash Depot (Lee Cardwell) for the last 8.5 years. Retired June 17th, 2006 for health reasons. I have two sons Russ and Chad. I have 3 grandchildren from Russ ages 2, 5, and 18. Russ is 46 and Chad is 23. OTHERS ASSOCIATED WITH THE CLASS OF 1956 People who attended East with the class of 1956 but were not graduated from East. John Arnold [last updated July, 2004] After leaving East in 1956, I went into the Air Force for 4 years. I went to France to serve out my time. I really enjoyed Europe as I was able to see several different countries. We did our bombing and gun practices from Tripoli, Lybia twice a year. That too was a great experience. After returning home, I learned the optical trade and was a state licensed optician until I retired my license last year. I "do" enjoy retiring. I was married for 13 years and have two children. Boy and Girl. John and Lisa. My second wife (Edna) and I have spent 18 years together. We've owned a dog kennel for 16 years now. www.eandjkennel.com They are toy poodles. Her being a retired nurse really helps. We live in Fayette county southeast from Somerville. We now are raising Alpacas. The picture that I submit will be me holding our 1st born girl. These are some of the sweetest animals you would ever want to be around. I love to hear them when they are happy. They "hum". I also have a hobby that I enjoy very much. I have a small machine shop and love to make things in brass. The memories of East are wonderful. I met many people in classes also ahead and behind me. I felt like I had many friends. As I have just learned of this web site I am saddened to see the obituary section. Some people that I knew are no longer with us. Cy Bollinger [last updated May, 2005] I literally stumbled over the East High web-site and am deeply moved by wonderful memories with fleeting glimpses of friends and faculty members. For being there for just one year, I have an amazing recollection of people, places and situations like the class of '56 senior picnic at Pickwick, Miss Wills (Beowulf), Mr. Snieder's Ivy league suits, Mrs. "Shu" (Bobbie Jo's mama) and last, but not least, John Moore (many will recall why). I spent a number of years on the staff of the Dallas Times Herald as a special features writer and editor. In 1976, I relocated to rural Illinois and published three weekly newspapers. I have been a freelance journalist since sale of the papers in 1984 to a publishing company in Great Britain. My education includes graduation from the University of Texas (1960, fall semester) with a Bachelor of Science degree(pre-med). I began a career in Journalism in 1963 after leaving med school in Galveston, TX. My first newspaper job was general manager of the Englewood Herald, Englewood, Colorado. Nickey Gotten [last updated June, 1999] I graduated from the Taft School in Connecticut and then went on to Princeton University were I graduated in 1961. I then attended the University of Tennessee Medical School and graduated in 1965. Then an internship in Philadelphia followed by two years in the Navy and then three years of residency in internal medicine at the VA Hospital in Memphis. I have been in the practice of internal medicine since l971 and have a solo practice in Memphis. I am married to a wonderful wife, the former Pamela Mortimer of Kilmichael,Missisippi. Prior to his death, Gene Vieh was a participant with our alumni page. The following is his last posting with us. [posted August, 2007] I came to East High School from Pentecost-Garrison in 1950 and attended the sixth thru the eleventh grades. We moved to a farm in the Mississippi delta for my senior year. I spent four years at Mississippi State University earning a BS in Banking and Finance. I rodeoed and flew airplanes thru junior and senior high and then thru college. I rode my last bull in college. I graduated in May of 1960 with a regular Air Force commission as a Second Lieutenant and in June of 1960 was flying in the Air Force. I taught Air Force students to fly jets until I resigned in May of 1965 and moved to Atlanta to fly for Delta Air Lines. In February of 1966 I married Frances Hubbard of South Hill, VA and we lived in a rural area south of Atlanta. We have two daughters and now four grandchildren. In May of 1995 we bought a large ranch in Wyoming and moved there. We raise angus cattle and quarter horses. I flew for Delta both international and domestic until I retired in February 1997 and stopped commuting to Atlanta from Wyoming. Our remote ranch is located in central Wyoming at the southern end of the Big Horn Mountains.
